RIVER, FARMLAND & HILL (1712)
Mixed media on canvas

I love the
agricultural rhythms imposed on the organic landscape and I create
shorthand symbols for that. Some of the most
interesting patterns and rhythms are found in the Sacramento Delta. A favorite challenge of
mine in painting is to juxtapose the flat, 2-dimensional surface of the
canvas with the 3-dimensional reality of space, thus creating a tension
between the two. This painting exaggerates that aspect. Here, each line can be seen as receding
into space while at the same time respecting the flatness of the picture
plane. |
